A cargo vessel split into two halves

Wellington January 8 (Reuters).

A cargo vessel split into half near the coast of New Zealand because of stormy weather but still hit the reef.

The cargo vessel which carries the flag of Liberia was about 22 kilometers away from Taranga near the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

The authorities said that the two halves of the cargo vessel were on the reef of Astrolabe, and the distance between the stern and the bow of the cargo vessel was about 30 meters after it was hit by the storm.

David Belington the manager of the marine rescue unit in New Zealand said: "The two halves of the cargo vessel were endanger and they are still on the reef and many containers which were carried by the cargo vessel slipped into the sea after the crash."

The marine rescue unit suctioned more than one thousand tone of oil from the shipwrecked cargo vessel, but there is still a huge amount of oil.

The oil killed hundreds of birds and fish, and the water purification would take a long time, and this is the most horrible environmental disaster in New Zealand since decades.
